Revenue Sources, Advertising, and Direct Marketing Policy
Description
Jurnal Fisika Unand (JFU) is committed to transparency concerning its financial support, advertising practices, and communications with authors, reviewers, readers, and other members of the scholarly community.
JFU is a peer-reviewed, open-access journal published by the Department of Physics, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Universitas Andalas.
JFU’s current publishing activities are supported by:
- Article Processing Charges applied only to accepted articles; and
- institutional and operational support from Universitas Andalas.
JFU does not currently accept commercial advertising.
Financial support, sponsorship, advertising, marketing, and promotional activities must remain separate from peer review and academic editorial decision-making.
This policy applies to the publisher, Editor-in-Chief, editors, guest editors, Editorial Board members, journal staff, financial administrators, institutional partners, service providers, and other persons acting on behalf of JFU.
Policy
- Revenue Sources
JFU is currently supported through the following sources:
Article Processing Charges
An Article Processing Charge applies only to manuscripts that have been formally accepted for publication.
JFU publishes information concerning:
- the APC amount;
- submission and peer-review fees;
- invoicing and payment;
- waivers and discounts;
- refund conditions; and
- changes to applicable charges.
Payment of an APC does not guarantee peer review, acceptance, expedited processing, indexing, citation, or any other scholarly outcome.
Institutional Support
Universitas Andalas provides institutional and operational support for JFU. This support may include:
- publishing infrastructure;
- website hosting;
- Open Journal Systems support;
- technical services;
- administrative coordination;
- DOI and metadata administration; and
- other authorized support for scholarly publishing.
Any additional material source of funding or support, including grants, sponsorships, donations, partnerships, or service arrangements, will be disclosed where relevant.
JFU will not represent proposed, inactive, or unverified funding as a current source of revenue.
- Financial and Editorial Independence
Sources of revenue must not influence:
- technical screening;
- editorial screening;
- reviewer selection;
- peer review;
- revision assessment;
- acceptance or rejection;
- complaints or appeals;
- investigations of publication-integrity concerns;
- corrections, expressions of concern, or retractions; or
- post-publication discussion.
Editorial decisions must be based on scholarly merit, methodological and analytical soundness, ethical compliance, reporting quality, and relevance to the journal’s aims and scope.
An author’s ability or inability to pay an APC must not affect the scholarly assessment of a manuscript.
APC payments, invoices, waiver requests, discounts, and refunds must be administered separately from editorial assessment.
Editors and reviewers must not receive financial incentives based on the acceptance of individual manuscripts.
- Grants, Sponsorship, and Other Support
JFU may accept a grant, sponsorship, donation, service contribution, or other form of support only when the arrangement:
- is consistent with the journal’s scholarly purpose;
- does not compromise editorial independence;
- does not give the supporting party control over manuscript decisions;
- does not permit access to confidential editorial information;
- does not interfere with reviewer selection or peer review;
- does not restrict correction of the scholarly record;
- complies with applicable institutional requirements; and
- is disclosed publicly where relevant.
A funder or sponsor must not:
- select reviewers;
- determine whether a manuscript is accepted;
- suppress unfavorable findings;
- require favorable reporting;
- delay a correction or retraction; or
- require publication of promotional content.
Where an article, issue, special issue, project, or journal activity receives external support, the source and nature of that support must be disclosed clearly.
- Advertising
JFU does not currently accept commercial advertising.
JFU does not publish paid commercial advertisements:
- within research articles;
- within article PDFs;
- on article landing pages;
- in peer-review correspondence;
- in decision letters; or
- in a form that could be confused with editorial or scholarly content.
Journal-navigation links, indexing information, Creative Commons notices, institutional logos, scholarly-service links, and acknowledgments of authorized cooperation are not considered commercial advertising when they are accurate and are not paid promotional placements.
- Future Advertising Arrangements
If JFU considers commercial advertising in the future, the publisher must approve and publish a revised policy before advertising begins.
Any future advertisement must:
- be clearly identified as advertising;
- be visibly distinguishable from scholarly content;
- remain separate from editorial decisions;
- not be targeted using confidential manuscript information;
- not be linked to manuscript acceptance or rejection;
- not contain misleading scientific, medical, educational, indexing, or accreditation claims;
- comply with applicable institutional and legal requirements; and
- be removed when found to be inaccurate, unlawful, harmful, or inconsistent with JFU standards.
Acceptance of an advertisement would not constitute endorsement by JFU, its Editorial Board, the Department of Physics, or Universitas Andalas.
- Direct Marketing and Manuscript Solicitation
JFU may communicate directly with researchers and scholarly communities for legitimate journal purposes, including:
- calls for papers;
- invitations to submit manuscripts within JFU’s scope;
- invitations to qualified reviewers;
- special-issue announcements;
- publication of new issues;
- updates to Author Guidelines;
- changes to editorial policies;
- journal events; and
- other relevant scholarly information.
Direct marketing or manuscript solicitation conducted by or on behalf of JFU must be:
- accurate;
- professionally written;
- directed to a relevant audience;
- consistent with JFU’s aims and scope;
- transparent about the sender;
- non-misleading;
- non-coercive;
- proportionate and not excessive;
- consistent with the journal’s actual fees, peer-review process, publication frequency, accreditation, and indexing status; and
- compliant with applicable privacy and personal-data requirements.
JFU does not permit deceptive, indiscriminate, excessive, or coercive solicitation.
- Prohibited Marketing Practices
JFU and persons acting on its behalf must not:
- guarantee manuscript acceptance;
- imply acceptance before peer review;
- promise favorable reviewer recommendations;
- guarantee indexing, accreditation, citation, or publication outcomes;
- misrepresent the journal’s accreditation period;
- claim organizational membership without verifiable evidence;
- misrepresent publication frequency;
- conceal APCs or other applicable charges;
- create artificial urgency through misleading deadlines;
- repeatedly contact recipients who have requested that non-essential communication stop;
- use improperly obtained personal-contact lists;
- use false identities, misleading email addresses, or unauthorized domains;
- imitate communications from another journal or institution;
- make unsupported claims about impact, ranking, acceptance rate, or editorial speed; or
- use confidential submission or peer-review information for promotional purposes.
- Calls for Papers and Special Issues
A call for papers must accurately identify:
- the journal;
- the proposed topic;
- the journal’s aims and scope;
- accepted article types;
- the submission method;
- relevant dates;
- the peer-review model;
- applicable APCs;
- guest-editor arrangements, where relevant; and
- official contact information.
A call for papers must not imply that submission guarantees acceptance or expedited publication.
Special issues and guest-edited collections are subject to the same peer-review, competing-interest, publication-integrity, editorial-independence, copyright, and licensing standards as regular issues.
- Use of Personal Information
JFU may use contact information collected through its submission and publication systems only for legitimate journal purposes and in accordance with the JFU Privacy Statement and Personal Data Protection Policy.
Contact information must not be:
- sold;
- rented;
- disclosed to advertisers without lawful authority;
- used for unrelated commercial promotion;
- transferred to unauthorized third parties; or
- retained without an appropriate purpose.
Recipients of non-essential promotional messages must be given a practical means to request that such communication stop.
Editorial, administrative, legal, integrity, and publication communications relating to an active submission or published article are not considered optional marketing communications.
- Service Providers and Institutional Partners
Any person, contractor, service provider, society, or institutional partner communicating on behalf of JFU must comply with this policy.
Third-party communications must accurately represent:
- journal ownership;
- publisher identity;
- editorial leadership;
- aims and scope;
- peer-review process;
- APCs and other fees;
- publication schedule;
- open-access status;
- copyright and licensing;
- accreditation and indexing status; and
- official contact details.
JFU will take reasonable action to stop unauthorized, misleading, or non-compliant communications conducted in its name.
- Complaints and Concerns
Concerns relating to revenue, sponsorship, advertising, APC communication, or direct marketing may be reported to the JFU Journal Office.
A report should include:
- the communication or activity concerned;
- the date;
- the sender;
- the relevant claim;
- supporting evidence, such as an email or screenshot; and
- any relevant competing interest of the complainant.
Complaints will be handled under the JFU Complaints and Appeals Policy or Editorial Governance and Independence Policy.
A concern involving the Editor-in-Chief will be referred to an independent senior editor or a publisher-appointed officer who was not involved in the matter.

Technical Operational Steps
- The publisher and Journal Office review and document JFU’s current revenue sources and material institutional support at least annually.
- The Journal Office checks that the website accurately identifies the APC, institutional support, and any other material source of revenue.
- APC invoicing, payment verification, waiver decisions, discounts, and refunds are administered separately from scholarly assessment.
- Editors and reviewers are not informed of an author’s ability to pay or waiver request before the academic decision unless operationally necessary.
- A proposed grant, sponsorship, donation, partnership, or service arrangement is assessed for editorial-independence, confidentiality, privacy, legal, and competing-interest risks.
- Material financial or sponsorship arrangements must be documented and approved by the authorized publisher or institutional unit.
- The publisher determines whether a financial or sponsorship arrangement must be disclosed on the website, in a special issue, or within an individual article.
- The Journal Office verifies periodically that the statement that JFU does not accept commercial advertising remains accurate.
- Commercial advertising must not be introduced before revised terms have been approved and published.
- Calls for papers, special-issue invitations, mass communications, and other formal promotional materials are reviewed by an authorized JFU representative before distribution.
- Claims concerning scope, peer review, fees, timelines, publication frequency, accreditation, indexing, copyright, and open access are checked against current public records before distribution.
- Direct communications are sent only to audiences reasonably relevant to JFU’s scope and scholarly purpose.
- Every formal communication identifies JFU, its purpose, the official website, and an official contact address.
- Requests to stop non-essential promotional messages are recorded and implemented without unreasonable delay.
- Contact lists and communication records are stored securely and may be accessed only by authorized personnel.
- Third parties communicating on behalf of JFU receive written requirements concerning accuracy, confidentiality, privacy, competing interests, and prohibited practices.
- A complaint concerning revenue, advertising, or marketing is recorded together with the date, evidence, responsible person, and alleged issue.
- A person with a relevant competing interest must not decide the complaint.
- Corrective action may include revising or withdrawing a communication, stopping a campaign, notifying recipients, terminating an arrangement, updating the website, or restricting a service provider.
- Revenue records, sponsorship records, communication approvals, opt-out requests, complaints, decisions, and corrective actions are retained securely in accordance with institutional requirements.
- The Editor-in-Chief and publisher periodically assess whether financial or promotional activities have created, or appeared to create, improper influence over editorial decisions.
- A material change to revenue sources, advertising practices, or direct-marketing arrangements is dated and disclosed on the JFU website.
- This policy is reviewed at least once every two years and earlier whenever the journal’s funding model, advertising practices, marketing activities, institutional arrangements, professional standards, or applicable requirements materially change.
