Identification of heavy metal pollution in the sediments of the Batang Arau River, Padang City based on the magnetic susceptibility value has been carried out. Sampling was collected from upstream to downstream at 20 points with 10 cm depth. The results shows that magnetic susceptibility values range from 116.6× 10-8 kg-1m3 to 914.0 × 10-8 kg-1m3. The pattern of χFD (%) in the scattergram shows that almost all samples have a value of χFD (%) <5%. This shows the grain size in the research location, namely the fine and coarse mixture of non-SP grains which are mostly produced from pollution processes. Based on the magnetic susceptibility value and the χFD(%) pattern in the scattergram, the research area has experienced pollution from low to very high polluted categories. Sediments located in densely populated residential zones in the midstream area  to have a higher susceptibility value than in non-densely populated residential zones in the upstream area. It can be said that the source of this pollution is an anthropogenic source.
