Abstract
Research had been conducted to determine the changes of  lubricant oil viscosityin the motor vehicle engine against temperature by using LSI (Laser Speckle Imaging). Component and material consisted of a He-Ne laser as light source, camera CCD (Charge Couple Device) detector, thermometer, heater, PC (Personal Computer) and oil. Mesran SAE 20W-50 oil was used in research. Oil was heated at temperature 30ºC,40ºC, 50ºC, 60°C, 70ºC, 80ºC, 90ºC,  and 100ºC. He-Ne laser beam was directed at the sample to occur back-scattering and detected by using a CCD camera. Information from the CCD was recorded by using Ulead Video Studio-10 software size 320x240 pixels and displayed in the form speckle pattern. The speckle pattern was converted to gray scale and analyzed by using the histogram method in ImageJ software to obtain speckle contrast value. The highest contrast value were obtained at temperatures 30°C at 0.3183 a.u. The lowest contrast value were obtained at temperatures 100ºC at 0.1756 a.u. The Decreasing of speckle contrast value changes when the temperature increased, it showed oil viscosity change. Contrast regression value obtained were 0.933. The more decreased the viscosity of oil, the values of speckle contrast would be smaller that followed an exponential function.
